This year, I will start with some interesting book reviews of both language aids, such as textbooks and phrasebooks, as well as novels related to China, Korea and Asia in general. Today, I am presenting to you one of the greatest language learning aids for the Korean language. I started learning Korean less than a year ago and had to rely on self-study for the most part. Just recently, I started getting 1-on-1 classes from a Korean teacher. The following book is a perfect addition for referring to the structure and grammar of the language.

Contents

The book has about 320 pages featuring very detailed instructions about using Korean grammar. There’s everything covered from sentence endings, honorifics over conversational bridges, softening strategies and local dialects to detailed vocabulary and grammar sections explaining all you need to know to master the language.

Why should you use this book?

I think reason number 1 on why you should use this book is definitely the vast information you get out of it. It can work as your number 1 resource for learning and deepening your grammar knowledge in Korean. At the same time, it’s easy to work with and structured very logically starting with easier topics and working its way up to harder grammar issues. I also really like the separate vocabulary and grammar sections which go into more detail on corresponding topics. Another great reason to purchase the book is that it’s published by the Cambridge University Press, which enjoys a great reputation and prestige among language learners.

Who should buy this book?

This book is great for learners of the Korean language who already have a certain basic knowledge of the language. This is because examples are mostly only written in Hangeul, the Korean letters, and there are no phonetics. Unless you already master Hangeul and have a certain stem of basic vocabulary, this book isn’t for you. However, you can use the book very early on in your study process as soon as you can read and write Korean and know basic vocabulary.

Where can you buy this book?

Luckily, you can actually get the book for free as a PDF version if you register for the newsletter on Topikguide.com! If not, you can purchase it on Amazon for $42.74 for the paperback version! I highly recommend you, therefore, to get it from Topikguide! It’s an amazing book with a high value for FREE!

My Rating

JANUARY 2013

I am giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. I really like working with it and find the information provided so detailed and useful! However, it’s not ideal for total beginners and still a little challenging for me. However, it can be downloaded for free when registering for the Topikguide newsletter which makes it a perfect value for (no) money!

It’s a great addition to my study resources!

Thanks that’s really cool 🙂 I already downloaded the two PDF’s and I think it’s great as a review and overview of the Korean grammar.
