Why Denver Deserves a Spot on Your Travel List

Beyond Asia: Why Denver Deserves a Spot on Your Travel List

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Asia is such a magnet for travelers, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a continent steeped in history, thousands of different cultures, iconic landmarks, cities, and locations, spiritual awakenings, glorious food, and so much more. It’s hardly surprising that many travelers flock to the other side of the world and end up overlooking other breathtaking destinations in the process!

Gems in the US in particular are often overlooked by those seeking to immerse themselves in Asian cultures and adventures, but in cities like Denver, Colorado, travelers can enjoy a sublime mix of urban vibrancy and access to some of the most beautiful landscapes and breathtaking terrain in the world. I’m talking, of course, about the Rocky Mountains. If you’ve never been to the Mile High City before, then it’s one you should definitely have on your bucket list, and in this post, I’ll highlight some practical tips for your first visit and shed some light on the unique experiences you can enjoy there. Read on to find out more.

Start Smart and Rent a Car

Denver is a large city, so getting around comfortably should be a priority for anyone who’s thinking of visiting. While public transportation in the city is generally reliable and good, hiring your own vehicle is highly recommended. If you rent a car at Denver airport, then you’ll have the luxury of setting your trip at your own pace. And it’s having that flexibility that means you can enjoy the best of both worlds: city attractions and experiences, as well as the option to head into the mountains, explore trails, and enjoy the scenery.

Whether you want to explore other nearby mountain towns and scenic byways or you just don’t want to struggle with your children and your luggage while waiting for the bus, hiring a vehicle for the duration of your Denver trip simply makes sense.

Downtown Denver: Culture, Food, and City Energy

Downtown neighborhoods in Denver are bustling with culture, food, and city energy, with glimpses into the city’s historic past by way of gorgeous architecture and the famous Union Station. My first pick would be Lower Downtown or LoDo. This is the oldest part of the city, filled with beautifully restored 19th-century brick warehouses that now house chic lofts, lively bars, and an impressive selection of craft breweries. It’s a great place to spend an evening wandering between historic streets, sampling local beers, or catching live music

Or if you’re looking for something a little more vibrant or an area that matches your energy, then head to River North Art District, also known as RiNo. Known for its bold street art, colorful murals, and industrial-chic vibe. It’s where Denver’s creativity really shines, with converted warehouses turned into galleries, trendy coffee shops, and food halls like Denver Central Market.

Downtown has a truly unique energy, where visitors can feel like they’re truly immersed in a lively, modern metropolis, yet the beautiful mountain backdrop and outdoor lifestyle keep everything grounded, friendly, and approachable. It’s what makes Denver such a unique experience. Attractions in the city you might want to add to your list include:

  • Denver Art Museum
  • History Colorado Center
  • Denver Botanic Gardens
  • Colorado State Capitol Building

The Great Outdoors on Your Doorstep

Denver is known as the Gateway to the Rockies, which means visitors have some of the most glorious and awe-inspiring scenic drives, hikes, trails, and vistas just a few hours (or even less) away from their accommodation in the city. Whether you want to enjoy a full day trip out in the Rockies, or you want to enjoy a gentle hike that matches your fitness levels and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for an hour or so, Denver will accommodate. Here are some highlights visitors shouldn’t miss.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Hop in your hire car and take a drive, just 2 hours from Denver, and you’ll find Colorado’s crown jewel. The park offers dramatic alpine scenery, over 300 miles of hiking trails, and the chance to spot wildlife like elk, moose, and bighorn sheep. The Trail Ridge Road, one of the highest paved roads in North America, provides jaw-dropping panoramic views and is an unforgettable drive if you’ve rented a car!

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Have you ever seen an open-air theatre? Better yet, have you ever seen one that’s been carved directly into red sandstone cliffs? Only a short drive from the city, Red Rocks Amphitheater is both a natural wonder and a cultural landmark. Even if you don’t watch a show there, you can enjoy a hike in the surrounding trails!

Other Day Trips to Enjoy

With your rental car, you can reach charming towns like Boulder (home to a vibrant university atmosphere and outdoor cafes), Golden (a former gold rush town with Western charm), and Estes Park (the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park). Each offers its own unique slice of Colorado life.

Sports, Breweries, and Local Life

If you want to try something not as strenuous as hiking or you want to try something new inbetween your outdoor adventures, then Denver has a lot to offer.

Sports Culture: Denver takes its sports very seriously! And if you want to feel like a local, then you may want to try to catch a game during your trip. You could head to Coors Field to see the Rockies play baseball in a stadium with stunning mountain views, join the excitement of an NBA game with the Denver Nuggets, or feel the electric energy of a Broncos football match.

Breweries: Denver is also a hotspot for breweries and is considered to be a true craft beer capital. You’ll find everything from crisp lagers to adventurous sours. Many breweries also host food trucks and live music, making them social hubs as much as tasting spots you simply must try!

Final Thoughts…

With its excellent balance of city culture and outdoor adventures, Denver is the perfect travel destination for those who want to think beyond Asia or trips to the far East. So, start planning, book that rental car, and get ready to take some amazing photos. Denver awaits!
