It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down and simply enjoy the journey.

If you’re looking for towering skyscrapers, bustling shopping districts, and nonstop nightlife, Namhae probably isn’t the right destination for you.
But if your idea of the perfect trip involves winding coastal roads, quiet fishing villages, scenic cafés, mountain temples, and some of the most beautiful ocean views in South Korea, you’re going to fall in love with Namhae.
One of the things I appreciate most about Namhae is how different it feels from many of Korea’s better-known destinations. While places like Seoul and Busan are exciting and full of energy, Namhae invites you to slow down. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself pulling over every few minutes because another incredible viewpoint appears around the next corner.
Over the years, I’ve visited many of Korea’s coastal regions, but Namhae remains one of my favorites. Between the terraced rice fields of Daraengi Village, the breathtaking views from Boriam Hermitage, charming seaside cafés, and quiet beaches with crystal-clear water, there’s something incredibly peaceful about spending a few days here.

One of my favorite things about Namhae is that it doesn’t feel like a place you need to rush through. Some of my best memories here weren’t famous attractions at all. How to Get to Namhae
One of the reasons Namhae still feels like one of Korea’s best-kept secrets is that it takes a little more effort to get there. Unlike destinations such as Busan or Gyeongju, there isn’t a train station on the island, so the final part of your journey is always by road.
The good news? Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most scenic coastal drives in South Korea.

🚗 By Rental Car (My Recommendation)
If you only take one piece of advice from this guide, let it be this: rent a car.
While buses connect Namhae’s main towns and attractions, having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore hidden beaches, scenic viewpoints, mountain temples, and charming cafés at your own pace. Some of my favorite moments in Namhae happened completely by accident, pulling over to admire an ocean view or stopping at a café that caught my eye.
Driving in Korea is generally straightforward, and the roads around Namhae are well maintained and surprisingly quiet compared to the country’s larger cities.

Namhae is one of the few places in Korea where I genuinely think the drive is part of the experience. Some of the island’s most beautiful moments happen between attractions, whether it’s winding along the coastline, passing tiny fishing villages, or spotting another incredible viewpoint around the next bend.

🚌 By Intercity Bus
If you don’t plan to rent a car, the easiest way to reach Namhae is by intercity bus.
Direct buses operate from several major cities, including Seoul, Busan, Jinju, Changwon, and Daejeon, arriving at Namhae Intercity Bus Terminal (남해시외버스터미널). From Seoul, the journey takes approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes, while Busan is around 2 hours away.
Once you arrive at the terminal, you can continue to beaches, villages, and attractions using local buses or taxis.
🚄 By KTX
There isn’t a KTX station in Namhae itself, but you can easily combine Korea’s high-speed rail network with a short bus or rental car journey.
The nearest major stations are:
- Jinju Station – the most convenient option for continuing by bus or rental car
- Suncheon Station – a great choice if you’re combining Namhae with Yeosu or Suncheon
From either station, local buses or rental cars will get you to Namhae in roughly 1 to 1½ hours, depending on your route.

✈️ By Air
If you’re flying domestically, Sacheon Airport is the closest airport to Namhae, located about one hour away by car. It offers flights to and from Seoul, making it a convenient option if you’re short on time.
Another option is Gimhae International Airport in Busan. From there, you can rent a car or take a direct intercity bus to Namhae, making it an excellent choice for international visitors arriving in Korea.
🚗 What’s the Best Way to Get Around Namhae?
While it’s certainly possible to explore Namhae by bus, I highly recommend renting a car if your budget allows.
Many of the island’s best attractions are spread out across the coastline, and some of the most beautiful cafés, beaches, and viewpoints are easiest to reach by car. You’ll also have the flexibility to stop whenever a scenic viewpoint catches your eye, something that’s difficult to do when relying on public transportation.
If you’re planning to spend 2–3 days in Namhae, having your own car will make the trip far more enjoyable and let you experience the island at the relaxed pace it deserves.
How Many Days Do You Need in Namhae?
I recommend spending at least two full days in Namhae, although three days is ideal if you enjoy slow travel and want to explore beyond the main sights.
Unlike cities such as Seoul or Busan, Namhae isn’t a destination where you rush from one attraction to the next. The real magic lies in the scenic drives, quiet beaches, charming cafés, and breathtaking viewpoints you’ll discover along the way.
If you only have one day, you can still visit highlights like Daraengi Village, Boriam Hermitage, and German Village, but your schedule will feel quite rushed.
With two days, you’ll have enough time to enjoy Namhae at a more relaxed pace, explore several beaches, stop at scenic cafés, and watch the sunset over the coast without constantly checking the time.
If you’re planning a road trip through southern Korea, I’d recommend staying three days. That gives you the freedom to venture off the main tourist route, discover hidden viewpoints, and simply enjoy one of Korea’s most beautiful coastal regions.

If I were planning this trip again, I’d choose three days without hesitation. Namhae isn’t the kind of destination where you want to tick off attractions as quickly as possible. Some of my favorite memories were completely unplanned: pulling over at a scenic overlook, lingering over coffee with an ocean view, or taking a detour simply because the road looked beautiful. Giving yourself an extra day lets you experience that slower side of Namhae, and I think that’s what makes the island so special.
The Best Things to Do in Namhae

1. Daraengi Village (다랭이마을)
If there’s one place that instantly comes to mind when I think of Namhae, it’s Daraengi Village.
Perched dramatically on the steep slopes overlooking the South Sea, this tiny farming village is famous for its breathtaking terraced rice fields that seem to tumble toward the coastline. Unlike the vast rice terraces you might find in countries like Vietnam or the Philippines, Daraengi Village feels much more intimate. Stone walls divide over 100 small rice paddies, creating one of Korea’s most iconic rural landscapes.
It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to slow down. Wander through the narrow village lanes, admire the ocean views, browse the small local shops, and stop for a coffee while looking out over the terraces. During spring and early summer, the vibrant green rice fields are especially beautiful, while autumn paints the entire hillside golden.
Although Daraengi Village has become one of Namhae’s best-known attractions, it still manages to retain much of its peaceful countryside charm.

After exploring the village, stop by Café Tol, one of my favorite cafés in Namhae. Its flower-filled garden and panoramic views over the rice terraces and coastline make it the perfect place to relax before continuing your road trip.
📸 Photography Tip
The best panoramic views of Daraengi Village aren’t from the center of the village itself but from the road leading into it. If you’re driving, pull over at one of the designated viewpoints before descending into the village. It’s one of the best photo opportunities in all of Namhae.
2. Boriam Hermitage (보리암)
Perched high on the slopes of Geumsan Mountain, Boriam Hermitage is easily one of the most breathtaking temples in South Korea. The combination of dramatic granite peaks, centuries-old temple buildings, and sweeping views over Namhae’s coastline makes it one of those places that stays with you long after your trip.
Boriam is believed to have originally been founded during the Silla Dynasty and has long been considered one of Korea’s three great prayer temples. Many Koreans visit to pray for good fortune, health, and success, giving the temple a peaceful yet deeply spiritual atmosphere.
Even if you’re not particularly interested in temples, the panoramic views alone are worth the visit. On a clear day, you can see dozens of islands scattered across the South Sea, making this one of the best viewpoints in Namhae.

3. German Village (독일마을)
One of Namhae’s most unusual attractions is German Village, a small hillside community built for Korean miners and nurses who returned home after working in Germany during the 1960s and 1970s.
Today, the village is known for its distinctive European-style red-roofed houses, winding streets, German restaurants, cafés, and small museums that tell the fascinating story of the people who once lived and worked abroad before settling here.
While it can feel a little touristy during weekends, it’s still a fun stop and unlike anywhere else you’ll find in Korea.

4. Seolli Skywalk (설리스카이워크)
If you’re looking for one of Namhae’s most exciting viewpoints, don’t miss the Seolli Skywalk.
Stretching out over the coastline, this glass-floored observation deck lets you walk above the sea while enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding islands. It’s a relatively short stop, but the scenery makes it well worth including in your itinerary, especially if you’re already exploring the eastern side of the island.
For thrill seekers, there’s even a giant swing that sends riders soaring out over the ocean.

5. Sangju Eunmosae Beach (상주은모래비치)
When most people think of Korea’s beaches, places like Busan or Jeju usually come to mind. But Sangju Eunmosae Beach proves that Namhae deserves a spot on that list too.
Its name literally means “Silver Sand Beach,” and it’s easy to see why. The long stretch of soft sand, calm turquoise water, and pine trees backing the beach create a postcard-perfect setting that’s ideal for a relaxing afternoon.
Unlike many of Korea’s more famous beaches, Sangju rarely feels overcrowded outside the peak summer season. The shallow water also makes it a popular choice for families with young children.
Whether you want to swim, enjoy a seaside picnic, paddleboard, or simply relax with a good book, this is one of the best places on the island to slow down and enjoy Namhae’s natural beauty.

6. Namhae Yangtte Farm (남해양떼목장)
If you’re traveling with kids, or simply love scenic countryside landscapes, Namhae Yangtte Farm is a lovely stop.
Set on rolling green hills overlooking the sea, the farm is home to sheep that visitors can feed while enjoying panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. It’s a surprisingly peaceful place and feels quite different from the coastal attractions around the island.
While the sheep are naturally the biggest draw, many people come just for the scenery. On a clear day, the combination of grassy hills and blue ocean almost feels more like New Zealand than South Korea.

One of Namhae’s hidden gems is the Wind Trace Art Museum, a small contemporary art museum surrounded by gardens and beautiful countryside.
The museum regularly hosts rotating exhibitions by Korean artists, but even if modern art isn’t usually your thing, it’s worth visiting for the peaceful setting alone.
Unlike larger museums in Seoul or Busan, this feels intimate and unhurried. It’s the perfect place to spend an hour on a rainy afternoon or during a slower day exploring the island.

8. Mulgeon Bangjoeoboo Forest (물건방조어부림)
If you’re looking for somewhere peaceful to escape the midday sun, head to Mulgeon Bangjoeoboo Forest.
This centuries-old coastal forest was originally planted to protect nearby farmland and villages from strong sea winds. Today, it’s a designated natural monument and one of Namhae’s most tranquil places to take a walk.
Shaded walking paths wind beneath towering trees, with glimpses of the sea peeking through the branches. It’s a wonderful contrast to the island’s open beaches and mountain viewpoints.

9. Geumsan Mountain (금산)
While many visitors head straight to Boriam Hermitage, the mountain itself deserves just as much attention.
Standing 705 meters (2,313 feet) above sea level, Geumsan Mountain is one of South Korea’s most scenic peaks. It’s famous for its dramatic granite rock formations, forested hiking trails, and incredible views across Namhae and the South Sea.
The hike to Boriam is relatively manageable for most visitors, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can continue exploring Geumsan’s network of trails and viewpoints. Along the way, you’ll pass uniquely shaped rock formations, quiet forest paths, and several lookout points that make the climb well worth the effort.

10. Mijo Harbor (미조항)
If you want to experience everyday life in Namhae, spend an hour wandering around Mijo Harbor.
Located on the island’s southern coast, this charming fishing village is filled with colorful boats, seafood restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels worlds away from Korea’s larger cities.
It’s also one of the best places to enjoy freshly caught seafood while watching local fishermen come and go throughout the day.
Unlike German Village or Daraengi Village, Mijo hasn’t been developed specifically for tourism, which gives it a much more authentic feel.

11. Yongmunsa Temple (용문사)
Overshadowed by the popularity of Boriam, Yongmunsa Temple remains one of Namhae’s quieter spiritual retreats.
Nestled among the forest, the temple offers a completely different atmosphere from Boriam. Instead of dramatic ocean views, you’ll find peaceful woodland paths, colorful lanterns, and beautifully preserved traditional buildings.

12. Namhae Coastal Drive
Some of the best experiences in Namhae aren’t attractions at all.
They’re the winding coastal roads connecting them.
Driving through Namhae is part of the adventure. Every few kilometers, another viewpoint appears overlooking fishing villages, tiny islands, dramatic cliffs, or secluded beaches. It’s one of the few places in Korea where I regularly found myself pulling over simply to admire the scenery.
If you’re visiting with a rental car, don’t be afraid to take the occasional detour. Some of my favorite discoveries happened on roads that weren’t originally part of my itinerary.

Where to Stay in Namhae
Finding the right place to stay can make a huge difference to your trip. Namhae is larger than many first-time visitors expect, and attractions are spread across the island rather than concentrated in one town.
If you’re visiting without a car, staying near Namhae-eup gives you the easiest access to buses, restaurants, and shops.
If you’re renting a car, I’d recommend choosing a hotel or pension along the southern coast, where you’ll wake up to incredible sea views and be just a short drive from many of the island’s top attractions.

💛 My Favorite Food Stops in Namhae
One of the things I love most about Namhae is that eating and drinking become part of the journey rather than something you squeeze in between attractions. One minute you’re enjoying coffee on a terrace overlooking the sea, the next you’re wandering through a traditional market or biting into a surprisingly incredible burger after a scenic drive.
If I could only choose three stops, I’d pick Café Tol for the unforgettable views, The Pool for lunch, and Yuznomore for a leisurely brunch before another day of exploring. Those three places perfectly capture the relaxed, slow-travel atmosphere that makes Namhae one of my favorite destinations in Korea.
The Perfect 2-Day Namhae Itinerary
If you’re visiting Namhae for the first time, I recommend spending at least two full days exploring the island. This itinerary combines the island’s most famous attractions with scenic drives, beautiful cafés, and plenty of time to simply enjoy the coastal views.
Rather than rushing from one attraction to the next, I’ve designed this itinerary around the slower pace that makes Namhae such a memorable destination.
Day 1: Daraengi Village & Namhae’s Southern Coast
☀️ Morning
Start your day early at Daraengi Village, Namhae’s most iconic attraction. Arriving before the tour buses means you’ll get to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere while the rice terraces are beautifully lit by the morning sun.
Once you’ve explored the village, walk over to Café Tol for coffee and dessert with one of the best views on the island. Sitting on the terrace overlooking the rice terraces and the sea is one of my favorite experiences in Namhae.
🚗 Late Morning
From Daraengi Village, continue your drive west along the scenic coastal road.
This stretch of highway is one of the most beautiful drives on the island, with endless ocean views, tiny fishing villages, and plenty of places to stop for photos.
🍴 Lunch
Stop at Namhae Aenggang Market for lunch.
Browse the market, sample local specialties, and soak up the authentic atmosphere before continuing your road trip.
☕ Afternoon
After lunch, make your way to Namhae Lounge 32 for another coffee break overlooking the sea.
Then continue south toward Sangju Eunmosae Beach, one of Namhae’s most beautiful stretches of coastline. Spend some time relaxing on the beach, swimming during summer, or simply enjoying a walk along the shoreline.
If you still have room for dessert, finish the afternoon at 화소반 Dessert Café, one of Namhae’s coziest cafés.
🌅 Evening
Head back to your accommodation and enjoy dinner at a nearby seafood restaurant or simply relax while watching the sunset over the coast.

Don’t worry if this day feels light on major attractions. Some of my favorite memories in Namhae came from the drive itself, stopping whenever a beautiful viewpoint or charming little café appeared along the road.
Day 2: Temples, Ocean Views & German Village

Start your second day at Boriam Hermitage, one of Korea’s most spectacular temples. Arriving early not only means cooler temperatures but also fewer visitors, allowing you to fully appreciate the breathtaking views over Namhae’s coastline.
If you enjoy hiking, spend a little extra time exploring Geumsan Mountain before continuing your journey.
🌊 Late Morning
Drive toward Seolli Skywalk, where you’ll be treated to sweeping views over the South Sea.
If the weather is nice, take a short stroll along nearby Seolli Beach before continuing north along the scenic coastal road.
🇩🇪 Afternoon
Spend the afternoon exploring German Village, browsing its charming streets, and learning about the fascinating history of the Korean miners and nurses who returned from Germany.
Don’t miss Reubaengseuta German Village Bakery, where you can pick up a freshly baked pretzel or pastry before continuing to Anhwa Hanok Café for a relaxing coffee break in a beautifully restored traditional Korean house.
From there, take a peaceful walk through Mulgeon Bangjoeoboo Forest before visiting the nearby Wind Trace Art Museum, one of Namhae’s hidden cultural gems.
🐑 Late Afternoon
If you still have time before heading back, make one final stop at Namhae Yangtte Farm.
Perched on rolling hills overlooking the sea, it’s a peaceful place to end your Namhae adventure. Feed the friendly sheep, soak up the panoramic countryside views, and enjoy one last reminder of why Namhae is one of Korea’s most underrated road trip destinations.

🚗 Rent a car if possible
While buses connect the island’s main towns, many of Namhae’s best viewpoints, beaches, and cafés are much easier to reach by car. Having your own vehicle also gives you the freedom to stop whenever the scenery catches your eye.

Google Maps isn’t very reliable in South Korea. I recommend downloading Naver Map before your trip for accurate navigation, driving directions, and public transportation information.
⏰ Start early
Popular attractions like Daraengi Village and Boriam Hermitage are much quieter in the morning. You’ll also enjoy cooler temperatures and better light for photography.
🌊 Leave time for spontaneous stops
One of the best things about Namhae is simply driving along the coast. Don’t pack your schedule too tightly. Some of the island’s best viewpoints aren’t listed on any map.

Absolutely. If you enjoy scenic coastal drives, peaceful villages, beautiful beaches, and ocean-view cafés, Namhae is one of South Korea’s most rewarding destinations. It’s perfect for travelers looking to experience a slower, more relaxed side of the country.
How many days do you need in Namhae?
I recommend spending two to three days in Namhae. This gives you enough time to visit the island’s main attractions while also enjoying its scenic drives, cafés, and beaches without feeling rushed.
Do you need a car in Namhae?
While it’s possible to explore Namhae by bus, I highly recommend renting a car. Many of the island’s best attractions are spread out, and having your own vehicle makes it much easier to discover hidden viewpoints, cafés, and beaches.

What is Namhae famous for?
Namhae is best known for Daraengi Village, Boriam Hermitage, scenic coastal roads, beautiful beaches, German Village, and some of the best ocean-view cafés in South Korea.
Is Namhae better than Jeju?
They’re very different destinations. Jeju offers volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, and a much larger tourism infrastructure, while Namhae feels quieter, more authentic, and perfect for a relaxing coastal road trip. If you enjoy slow travel and fewer crowds, Namhae is hard to beat.
When is the best time to visit Namhae?
Late spring (May) and autumn (October) are my favorite times to visit thanks to the pleasant weather, beautiful scenery, and comfortable temperatures for exploring.
Can you visit Namhae as a day trip?
Technically yes, especially from Yeosu or Jinju, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Spending at least one or two nights allows you to experience the island’s relaxed atmosphere, beautiful sunsets, and scenic cafés without rushing.
Is Namhae family-friendly?
Definitely. Calm beaches, scenic drives, sheep farms, spacious resorts, and plenty of outdoor attractions make Namhae a wonderful destination for families traveling with children.
Is Namhae Worth Visiting? My Final Thoughts
After more than a decade of exploring South Korea, I’ve visited countless coastal destinations, but Namhae remains one of the places I recommend most often.
There’s something wonderfully unhurried about life here. Whether you’re driving along the coastline with the windows down, sipping coffee overlooking the sea, wandering through the rice terraces of Daraengi Village, or watching the sunset from a quiet beach, Namhae has a way of making you slow down and simply enjoy the journey.
If you’re looking for a destination beyond Korea’s biggest cities, one that combines spectacular scenery, charming villages, beautiful cafés, and unforgettable coastal drives, I genuinely think you’ll fall in love with Namhae just as I have.
So rent a car, give yourself at least two days, and don’t be afraid to take the scenic route. Chances are, your favorite memories won’t come from the famous attractions alone, but from the unexpected stops you discover along the way.
