BUDGET HOSTEL IN SINGAPORE Chinatown

5FOOTWAY.INN PROJECT ANN SIANG – BUDGET HOSTEL IN THE HEART OF SINGAPORE

Reading Time: 2 minutes

With around 75% of Singapore’s population identifying as ethnically Chinese, it comes with little surprise that Chinatown was, and still is, one of the most important cultural enclaves in the city. Chinatown Singapore is filled with UNESCO heritage sites and buildings and even its name,牛车水 (Niú chē shuǐ) that literally translates to “ox-cart water” is still being used today by locals as a reminder to the early days when the area’s water supply was transported by oxen.
What better place to stay in Singapore? On my recent trip, I stayed at 5footway.inn Project Ann Siang, a stunning budget hostel in Chinatown Singapore, and my time there couldn’t have been any more pleasant.

SMART FACILITIES AND FRIENDLY STAFF

Just like the 5footway.inn property at Boat Quay, the Ann Siang hostel is also located in a historic building in Chinatown. Even though a little smaller than its sister property, Ann Siang has everything you need and more. The lobby features computers with Internet that guests can use at all times to check their flights, make reservations or just surf the web. The refurbished building still contains the original balconies facing the iconic three-storey shophouses along Teo Hong Road.

You can clearly tell how passionate the staff is about their country and culture, especially when they told me the story behind the name of the hostel brand, when coolies, foreign immigrants to Singapore, transported goods around the five-foot narrow path between the Singapore River and the boat quay houses for trade. Moreover, there are city guides available for free and the shared bathroom and shower facilities can be used 24/7.

COMFORTABLE ROOMS

All of the rooms are air-conditioned and offer shared bathroom access. Selected rooms with en suite bathrooms are also available. To my surprise, the room was a lot bigger than I had expected and it even had a small balcony facing the hustle and bustle of Chinatown below. The bed was probably a full size, which was great for a good night’s sleep.

PERFECT LOCATION TO EXPLORE CHINATOWN & MORE

Due to Chinatown’s large role in the development of Singapore, you can find countless historic sites and attractions within walking distance of the hostel. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple can be spotted from the hostel’s rooftop and Smith Street with open-air food stalls is just across the street. Traditional Chinese medicine shops, souvenirs and Chinatown Complex, a large food center with dozens of hawkers offering delicious food, are exactly what makes this part of town so interesting. Chinatown MRT station is within a 5-minute walk of the hostel, making it easily accessible to all parts of Singapore.

What a perfect spot to stay and relax in Singapore! I have heard so much about the 5footway inn hostels – have had several friends stay and loved their brand. I’m glad to hear the rooms are all air-conditioned and with a full sized bed. Totally would make for a comfortable stay.
