The city of Kuala Lumpur is a multicultural and vibrant destination you just have to love. Malaysia’s capital offers everything travelers are looking for and more: vibrant culture, lip-smacking food, and rich history. It’s no wonder that there is a multitude of unique things to do in Kuala Lumpur for any taste. Whether you are seeking great food experiences, spectacular city views or pure relaxation, Kuala Lumpur will fulfill your wildest travel dreams.
Here are 6 unique things you must to in Kuala Lumpur:
Everyone knows the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. However, there is another tower that is worth visiting in the city. The KL Tower, also called Menara Tower, offers incredible views of the entire city. Most visitors check out the observation platform but there’s more. If you are looking for a truly unique experience, book afternoon tea or dinner at the rotating restaurant on top of the tower. ‘Atmosphere 360’ is a great way to see the entire city from the highest point in town. Because KL Tower is situated on top of a hill, it is actually higher than the Petronas Towers themselves. The experience costs 52 MYR ($12) which makes it unique and totally affordable!
Segway Tour Through Perdana Botanical Garden
Despite its enormous size and many districts, Kuala Lumpur is a very green city. One of its most popular parks is located near the National Mosque. Lake Gardens is home to a botanical garden, orchid park, zoo, a butterfly park and a lot more. It’s a large area with so many amazing things to explore. However, many visitors don’t get to see the entire park due to the time available during their travels. Lucky for you there is a way to explore the entire area in a fraction of the time. I was invited to join the local ‘Segway Tour’ with Eco Ride Malaysia through the park and couldn’t believe how much fun I had. I had never been on a segway before but had the best time explore the park speeding away. It’s easy, fun and saves you a lot of valuable travel time when choosing to explore the park by segway. The tour is RM168 ($38) per person and includes a minimum of 2 hours’ tour of the Lake Gardens, English & Chinese speaking guide, and a pickup/drop-off service to your hotel.
Cooling Down At Twin Towers Pools
I heard there’s a lot of amazing food options on the second and third floor of the Petronas Twin Towers. On my way to my foodie dreamland, I stumbled upon a collection of refreshing pools in the green park in front of the towers. Having walked for miles through the heavy heat of Kuala Lumpur, I jumped like a toddler when I realized you could actually stick your feet into the pools. The pool was not only a welcoming refresher but also an interesting location to watch locals relax and have a good time. Not many visitors know about this secret spot but you will be happy to head there when you are melting away in the hot Malaysian sun.
High Tea at Majestic Hotel
Having been a British colony in the past, certain English influences are greatly visible in Malaysia. One of them is the custom of having afternoon tea. If you think you’d rather not waste your time drinking tea when in one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting cities, think again. Head to the Majestic Hotel at 3 PM and get ready to stuff your face with some of the most delicious pastries and sandwiches in town. You also get to sip on fine Darjeeling tea with or without milk. The whole experience will only cost you around 120 MYR ($25) and you can easily spend a few hours there. If you get a chance, book a table at the exotic orchid room to drink your tea surrounded by Malaysia’s finest flowers.
Relax away at Lavish Spa
After having spent a few days in Kuala Lumpur, my feet were aching. It was time to check out the local spas! After doing some research I decided to pay a visit to a place called ‘Lavish Spa’ in the city’s Bukit Bintang district around Jalan Alor. I wish I had known about this place earlier! In fact, this establishment is far more than just a spa. It is comparable to a Korean Jjimjjilbang operating 24 hours non-stop. You can choose among a 6-hour or 24-hour stay.
Lavish Spa is one of the most affordable and unique things to do in Kuala Lumpur for only 68 MYR ($15) for the 6-hour package. Food and beverages are included and are plentiful. There’s a restaurant offering local and Western dishes from spring rolls, burgers and french fries to fried rice and noodles. The jacuzzis and saunas are gender segregated but the outdoor pool and relaxation rooms are common areas. The spa offers various massage treatments and a mani-pedi room. On top of that, there are various relaxation rooms with computers, massage chairs and an Internet connection for you to binge-watch on Youtube or your favorite shows. I honestly wanted to move into this place. DO NOT MISS IT!
Heli Lounge with amazing Views
For my last evening in Kuala Lumpur, I decided to visit the popular Heli Lounge, located on a helipad once used for helicopter landings. The area is pretty much open without any walls which is quite scary. However, conquering your fears, you will be rewarded with the best sunset in town. Visit around 6 PM and book a table in advance. You’ll need to spend a minimum of 100 MYR ($23) per person to book a table but the cocktails come in large numbers and the snack foods aren’t bad either. The sun sets around 7:15 giving you plenty of time to get your camera ready. Be sure to stay a little longer to see the city all lit up at night. It’s a view you will never forget.
